WHISPERING PINE CABINS — Travel Tips
When traveling to a winter destination like Ruidoso for some cool fun in the snow be prepared for the potential of bad roads. Even though Ruidoso seldom experieinces icy conditions it does occur. Please follow the rules listed below to insure a safe and pleasant visit to this wonderful winter paradise.
1) Check weather and road conditions and forcasts before leaving home
2) If chains are required purchase them before leaving home or as soon as you arrive in Ruidoso, Western Auto is located near the Lodge and sells and installs chains. Wal-mart & a few other locations along Sudderth and Mechem (our 2 main roads thru town) sell tire chains as well.
3) Do not buy gimic tire devices that claim to give you traction, they don't work. Purchase properly sized tire chains only
4) Give yourself plenty of time to arrive. Speed and slick roads don't mix
5) If driving a pick up truck make sure you have weight in the bed to allow for better traction
6) Ruidoso has several canyons, be prepared for slippery slopes on shady roads.
7) A four wheel drive takes the pain out of winter driving, but remember that four wheel drive does'nt offer better stopping power. Slow down!
8) The Village does a good job of getting to the roads with a grader and salt spreader, but sometimes it can take 24 hours to complete, be prepared
9) Whispering Pine Cabins cannot take responsibility for the weather or the roads, please don't expect us to come if you get stuck, Our insurance doesn't cover this. We have several tow companies in the area. As long as the highways are open the DOT deams it is safe for your travel and no cancellations will be honored. In the 10 years we have been in Ruidoso there has only been one incident where the hwy was closed for approximately 4 hours.
